If you are serious about your photography then you'll need to think carefully about the gadgets and gizmos that are going to aid you in your picture taking. More so than with any other hobby, quality goes a long way when choosing photographic accessories that not only do the job but are built to last.
Assuming that you have a digital SLR that uses interchangeable lenses, you'll know by now that a superior quality lens can make all the difference when taking those photos. The same applies to any other accessory from the humble camera bag to the various filters you might want to use.
Tripods
Nowhere is this truer than with tripods. You want something that it is sturdy but lightweight, easy to handle and is built to last, especially if you do something like landscape photography. A flimsy tripod is no good if you are taking pictures outside where there's a breeze strong enough to cause camera shake.
The right kit for the job
Have a think about the type of photography you are interested in and what your ideal tripod would look like. Do you want something simple and easy to erect? Or something more robust that could survive being knocked about a bit?
Your budget may constrain you on picking something with quality but it's worth saving for the right piece of equipment rather than settling for one that is substandard and not equal to the task.
If you are using a heavy lens then you might want to have a tripod that uses a gimble head and allows more speed of movement and flexibility than a normal tripod head.
Many tripods are made of either aluminium or carbon fibre and it can be a matter of personal choice which you go for. Aluminium is lighter but a little more flimsy than carbon fibre which probably has the best weight to strength ratio.
Why use a tripod anyway?
With higher spec digital SLRs coming onto the market and ever increasing ISO levels, many amateur photographers might be forgiven for thinking that the tripod has had its day. The truth is that it depends on what you want to do.
With lower ISOs a tripod is a necessary piece of equipment especially when working outdoors and in low or simulated light where a sharp image is the order of the day.
Buying a monopod
If you like to take action photos or need to move from place to place quickly taking pictures then a monopod may be the answer to your problems. It will provide a sturdy base but is less cumbersome and easier to transport than a tripod.
You can also get tripods that can be converted into a monopod by screwing a leg onto the central column and gives you the best of both worlds. Whichever you choose, there's no doubt that the tripod is a vital part of the serious photographer's equipment.
